2,181 faculty posts vacant across AIIMS institutes, 436 at AIIMS New Delhi: Health Ministry tells Parliament

Among all the institutes, AIIMS New Delhi has the highest number of vacant posts, with 436 faculty vacancies and 2,461 non-faculty vacancies, despite having the largest sanctioned strength.

Based on the 2026–27 data, excluding AIIMS New Delhi, the remaining 19 AIIMS continue to report significant vacancies in both faculty and non-faculty positions.

AIIMS Patna has 88 faculty and 1,103 non-faculty vacancies, followed by AIIMS Raipur with 92 faculty and 1,068 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Bhubaneswar with 99 faculty and 1,045 non-faculty vacancies, and AIIMS Rishikesh with 127 faculty and 973 non-faculty vacancies.

AIIMS Bhopal has 68 faculty and 853 non-faculty vacancies, while AIIMS Jodhpur has 184 faculty and 695 non-faculty vacancies. AIIMS Guwahati has 64 faculty and 685 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Rajkot has 89 faculty and 650 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Deoghar has 72 faculty and 639 non-faculty vacancies, and AIIMS Kalyani has 115 faculty and 504 non-faculty vacancies.

AIIMS Gorakhpur has 92 faculty and 493 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Nagpur has 91 faculty and 488 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Bibinagar has 52 faculty and 478 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Mangalagiri has 90 faculty and 479 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Bilaspur has 78 faculty and 473 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Raebareli has 96 faculty and 425 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Bathinda has 71 faculty and 382 non-faculty vacancies, AIIMS Jammu has 69 faculty and 326 non-faculty vacancies, and AIIMS Madurai has 108 faculty and 939 non-faculty vacancies.

The information was shared in response to the queries raised by a parliament member who sought to know about the large number of sanctioned faculty and non-faculty posts lying vacant in various All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the country, significant vacancies of faculty and non-faculty posts in AIIMS, New Delhi as well and if so, the impact of these vacancies on the long waiting time for patients undergoing tests and treatment, medical education and hospital administration; the number of appointments made in various AIIMS institutions during the last three years, along with the action taken by the Government to fill up the current vacancies; and the implementation of a special action plan to ensure timebound recruitment, availability of specialist doctors and timely diagnosis and treatment for patients across all AIIMS institutions.

To this, the Minister shared the details of sanctioned, filled and vacant faculty and non-faculty posts during the last three years and the current year, in various functional All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

To expeditiously fill vacant sanctioned positions in various AIIMS, Jadhav stated the following special measures taken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare:

(i) Standing Selection Committee has been constituted in each Institute as per the provision of their respective Act for selection of faculty etc.

(ii) Provision has been made for engagement of retired faculty at the level of Professor, Additional Professor and Associate Professor, on contract basis, in new AIIMS, up to the age of 70 years from Institutes of National Importance (INIs) and Government Medical Colleges (GMCs).

(iii) Visiting Faculty Scheme has been formulated to allow Professors, Additional Professors and Associate Professors, who are holding academic positions in Government Institutions within India or academic institutions outside India, to be the Visiting Faculty in new AIIMS for teaching purposes.

(iv) Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test (NORCET) is conducted by AIIMS Delhi for recruitment of Nursing Officers for various AIIMS.

(v) Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) in 2025 was conducted by AIIMS Delhi twice in the year for recruitment to Group B and C non-faculty positions for various AIIMS.

(vi) The Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET) for selection of Junior Residents (Academic) and the Institute of National Importance Super Speciality (INI-SS) Exam for selection of Senior Residents (Academic) for various AIIMS are conducted by AIIMS Delhi twice a year.

"The Institutes are undertaking several patient-centric initiatives, like leveraging technology, and streamlining administrative processes by expansion of Out-Patient Department (OPD) services, increase in patient registration capacity, online appointment system, implementation of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)-enabled Digital Health Services, same-dayinvestigation, expansion of diagnostic facilities, integrated specialist care, cashless treatment under Government Schemes etc," the Minister said.
