350 GMCH Aurangabad Resident Doctors stage protest to condemn assault on colleague

Aurangabad: A resident doctor at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Aurangabad has been assaulted by the relatives of a patient, following which 350 resident doctors cut off work as a mark of protest. 

Based on the complaint filed by the doctor, a case of obstructing the government work has been registered with the Begumpura police station, said the PI Prashant Potdar. The doctors also resumed their work on Thursday morning.

The incident took place when a person who got into an accident was admitted to GMCH on Tuesday night. However, the relatives of the patient assaulted the doctor identified as Dr Uday Chundurji accusing him of negligence in treatment at around 2 AM. 

Dr Shirish Phadnis, vice-president, Aurangabad chapter of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), said the patient's younger brother attacked the doctor at the department of surgery in the wee hours on Wednesday. "The patient was drunk and had received a head injury. He was attended to as per medical protocol and needed intubation as his health was worsening. His younger brother became agitated when he saw the patient being intubated and attacked a resident doctor and other health staff," Phadnis told the Times of India. 

The MARD stated that the doctor got a serious injury on the right eyebrow and required stitches. As per GMCH records, two people identified as Karuna Nayadu and Mohd Irfan had admitted the patient to the hospital. However, the identities of the relatives who attacked the doctor are not yet known, reports the Lokmat Times. The PSI Vishal Bodkhe is probing the case.

Following the incident, nearly 350 resident doctors at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) went on a strike demanding an overhaul of the security system at the hospital, including an effective check on the movement of visitors in the casualty and other key departments. The strike partly affected the health system at the institution. 

However, they called off their strike the next day with Dr Shirish Phadnis stating that the GMCH administration has started taking steps for improving the safety of doctors on duty. He said, "In response to our demand, the authorities have introduced one entry-one exit at the Causality department. The process of issuing passes to visitors is also getting introduced in a phased manner."
