4 arrested in Telangana Paediatrician assault case

Adilabad: Following a violent incident in which a doctor and hospital staff were allegedly assaulted at a Nirmal-based Hospital, the police have arrested four individuals in connection with the attack.

The case has once again highlighted the ongoing concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals.

The paediatrician was allegedly attacked following a dispute over medical expenses at his hospital. What began as an argument with hospital staff reportedly escalated into violence, with the assailant physically attacking the doctor. A video of the incident, widely circulated on social media, showed the doctor being thrashed while staff members try to intervene.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the medical fraternity in Telangana had expressed strong concern and condemnation over the recent assault on a paediatrician by a patient's relative at a private hospital in Nirmal.

Raising concern over rising attacks on doctors, Telangana Senior Residents Doctors Association (T-SRDA), in a press release, stated that preliminary reports indicate that the incident arose following a disagreement related to billing, which unfortunately escalated into an act of physical violence by a group of attendants. During the episode, both the treating doctor and hospital personnel were subjected to assault and intimidation. Such incidents are highly distressing and reflect a growing threat to the safety of healthcare providers, said the association.

The New Indian Express reported that After the accused’s daughter was discharged from the hospital, he allegedly asked the doctor to inflate the bill to facilitate an insurance claim; when the doctor refused, he verbally abused him and later assaulted the doctor and staff along with his brothers..

The hospital management lodged a formal complaint with the police on March 26. Following the complaint, authorities reviewed CCTV footage and collected witness statements, which helped them identify and apprehend the accused.

Speaking to TNIE, District SP Dr. G. Janaki Sharmila warned that attacks on doctors and hospital staff are grave offences and said strict legal action would be taken against those involved.

The incident underscores the urgent need for better protection and security measures for healthcare workers.
