Kolkata: In an unfortunate incidenta senior doctor allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling at her residence in Behala’s Diamond Park after a fight with her husband on Sunday morning. 

The deceased, a 57-year-old voluntarily retired doctor who used to work at Joka ESI Hospital suddenly ended her life which shocked her neighbours who knew her as a dignified and confident woman.  

During the investigation of her case, the police discovered that the couple got into a fight a day before she took the extreme step. The police have also verified that the couple were involved in a dispute over multiple issues, but the exact reason for her death is still unclear.

The husband in this case was called for questioning at the police station till Sunday evening. Additionally, he refused to speak with TOI on the issue.

As per The Daily, the husband practises at a private hospital and has a chamber at the James Long Sarani-MG Road crossing. The police are presently investigating the case.

“We have learnt there was a discord between the two last evening over multiple issues. We are probing into the case to find out what exactly happened that led to her death,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.

The incident came to light when the husband informed the police upon discovering his wife's hanging body in her room. Her body was sent for postmortem to M R Bangur Hospital.

According to her neighbour, her main focus was engaging in social service within the local community. She played an active role in the organization of the Durga Puja festival in the neighbourhood and was highly recognized within the area.

“She was a very dignified and confident woman. It’s difficult to accept she has died by suicide,” said a neighbour.

“They seemed like a normal couple. Even on Saturday, she gave me two packets of ‘abir’ for my children. I can’t believe she is no more,” said Bina Pramanik, their domestic help.

A case was registered and an investigation is underway.
