75 year old doctor assaulted, robbed of Rs 2 lakh by 6 armed men in Jagraon

Ludhiana: In a shocking incident, a 75-year-old doctor was allegedly assaulted and robbed by six armed men posing as patients at his private clinic in Punjab's Jagraon on Thursday morning. The accused reportedly fled with around Rs 2 lakh in cash, a gold ring and a mobile phone, leaving behind their motorcycle.  

The incident occurred at Chopra Ayurvedic Hospital near Old Raikot Road Chowk, close to the City Police Station in Jagraon. Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage that reportedly captured the movements of the six suspects. They are also trying to trace the owner of the motorcycle.

According to the doctor, the robbery was allegedly meticulously planned and executed under the guise of seeking medical treatment. He said one of the accused, a 24-year-old man, met him at the milk shop on Wednesday and discussed his health problem. The doctor advised him to visit the clinic the following morning for treatment.

At around 7:15 am on Thursday, the man arrived at the clinic posing as a patient and complained of illness. After administering a glucose drip, the doctor briefly went to his residence behind the clinic to take a bath. During that time, five more men allegedly entered the clinic. 

The doctor alleged that the six men overpowered him, covered his mouth, and dragged him into a rear room of the clinic. When he resisted, they allegedly assaulted him and threatened him with a revolver.  

As per Hindustan Times, “Under threat, I handed over around Rs 1.5 lakh kept in the clinic’s safe. The robbers then searched my pockets and took another Rs 30,000, along with my mobile phone and a gold ring,” said the doctor. “The gang subsequently entered the residential portion of the premises located behind the clinic. There, they allegedly manhandled my wife and attempted to choke her while searching for more valuables. The situation changed when my son arrived and confronted the robbers. Faced with resistance, the miscreants panicked and rushed out of the premises,” he added.

The doctor’s wife said, “In the morning, when her husband was out, a youth entered their house and asked for water. Then other suspects also came.” She told them, “I’ll give a bottle. As I was taking the bottle from the fridge, one of them came from the rear and grabbed my face. I screamed loudly due to which my son, who was sleeping, woke up. He lifted a chair after which three of the robbers ran out. A woman was also with them,” reports The Tribune. 

Police from the City Police Station, led by Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Parminder Singh, reached the spot soon after the incident and launched an investigation.

The police have taken possession of the motorcycle left behind by the accused and are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in the area to identify the six suspects. Investigators are also trying to trace the registered owner of the abandoned motorcycle.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) Jaswinder Singh stated that Ludhiana Rural SSP has formed a special team to solve the case and to arrest the accused.
