Ahmedabad: A doctor has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 25-year-old woman patient during medical examinations on two consecutive days at a private hospital in Memnagar, Ahmedabad. The woman approached the police after disclosing the alleged incidents to her family.

According to the complaint, the woman had been undergoing treatment for a gastric ulcer at the hospital. She had initially consulted the doctor and underwent an examination and sonography before being prescribed medication.

When her symptoms did not improve after completing the course of treatment, she returned to the hospital with her family on October 1 and was admitted for further treatment.

According to India Today, police said that later that evening, the doctor allegedly examined her breasts without gloves. The complaint states that no female staff member was present at the time.

The woman has alleged that the conduct continued the following day. Police said the doctor took her to a separate room at the hospital and locked the door before telling her that an abdominal examination was required.

Police said he claimed that he needed to examine her abdomen and, in the absence of female staff, allegedly made her remove her undergarments twice, reports India Today.

She subsequently informed her family about what had allegedly happened and approached the Vastrapur police along with them.

Police registered an FIR under Sections 64(1) and 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The doctor was arrested on October 4 and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody at Central Jail.

Investigators are examining the woman’s complaint, hospital records and other available evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents.

The allegations are under investigation and will be subject to due process before the court.
