Ahmedabad: In a shocking incident, a contractual orthopaedic surgeon at Gujarat’s Anand General Hospital was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to perform a surgery that was supposed to be conducted free of cost.
According to the news reports, the arrest followed a complaint lodged at the Anand ACB police station by a local resident, who alleged that the doctor had sought money to perform a finger surgery on his friend.

Police said the complainant informed authorities that the doctor initially demanded Rs 6,500 for the procedure. However, after negotiations, the amount was allegedly reduced to Rs 4,000. The complainant reportedly paid Rs 1,000 in advance, while the doctor allegedly instructed him to pay the remaining Rs 3,000 after the surgery was completed.
Unwilling to pay the balance amount, the complainant informed anti-corruption authorities, who subsequently organised a trap operation inside the hospital premises.
According to investigators, the complainant met the doctor outside the operating theatre lobby on the first floor of the hospital, where the two allegedly discussed the remaining payment.
Speaking to NDTV, police said the doctor accepted the marked Rs 3,000 during the operation. Officials then arrested him and recovered the cash. The accused has been charged under anti-corruption provisions for abusing his position and accepting illegal gratification. Further investigation is underway.
The agency stated that by allegedly demanding and accepting illegal gratification while misusing his position as a public servant, the accused committed an offence of criminal misconduct. Further investigation is underway, reports Desh Gujarat.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over corruption in public healthcare institutions.
