RG Kar Case: ED gets approval to prosecute former principal Sandip Ghosh
RG Kar Medical College
Kolkata: In a recent development in the controversial rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College Hospital, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly received permission to initiate legal proceedings against the former principal of the hospital.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who said the move marked an important step toward ensuring justice in the case. He said he considered himself fortunate to have taken what he described as a “noble and constructive step” as Chief Minister.

The proceedings have been approved by the governor under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), as per an order issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The order further noted that CBI had registered a regular case against Ghosh and three entities- Maaxf Tara Traders, Eshan Cafe, and Khama Louha, under charges related to criminal conspiracy, cheating, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act, reports TOI.
Taking to the social media platform 'X', Adhikari stated that the ED has received approval to prosecute Sandip Ghosh, who was serving as the principal and administrative head of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at the time of the incident on August 9, 2024.
Adhikari alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government had delayed and obstructed the investigation process for a considerable period. He claimed that the latest decision reflects a commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in the case. He further said, "We believe that no one is above the law. The truth cannot be suppressed. I want the real culprits to be identified as soon as possible, to receive the harshest punishment, and to ensure justice for the people of Bengal."
He further noted that the ED’s permission to prosecute the former principal would allow the agency to proceed with legal action aimed at securing a conviction in the case.
The incident dates back to the night of August 9, 2024, when a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The crime triggered widespread outrage across the country, with doctors staging protests and a prolonged strike that lasted nearly 42 days.
Subsequently, in January 2025, the court sentenced the prime accused to life imprisonment in connection with the rape and murder.
