Gaya: The professor and head of the neurosurgery department at Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH), Gaya, who had earlier filed a complaint alleging that his wife received two extortion calls demanding Rs 1 crore along with death threats, has now been arrested for allegedly lodging a false complaint and misleading the police.

The accused was arrested after police found several doubts and inconsistencies during the investigation. The police questioned why there was a delay in filing the complaint if his wife’s life was truly under threat. They were also suspicious because the complaint was filed by the doctor himself and not by his wife, even though the calls were allegedly made to her.

A few days earlier, the doctor had approached the local police, stating that some unknown callers had threatened his wife, a non-practising medical professional, with death if the demanded money was not paid.

However, investigators pointed out that the FIR raised suspicion from the beginning as it did not mention key details such as the time of the calls, the place, or the mode of payment for the alleged extortion.

TOI sources said a major breakthrough came after the wife recorded her statement and did not support the claims made in the complaint filed by her husband. This further raised doubts about the case and suspicion over the doctor’s questionable role.

Police also noted that although the calls were reportedly made to the wife's phone and the threats were directed at her, the complaint was filed by her husband, making it a case based on second-hand information.

As the probe progressed, police examined the couple’s strained personal relationship. The wife earlier told this newspaper that she suspected her husband of having an extra-marital relationship with a paramedical staff member at ANMMCH. She also claimed to possess messages allegedly exchanged between the two.

Reportedly, she shared these messages with the investigating officers. She also referred to an ongoing property dispute involving the doctor and some residents of the Gewalbigha locality of the town, which is also being examined as part of the probe.
