Assam Doctor Faces Corruption Charges after Rs 12.5 Crore Found in Probe

Guwahati: In a major crackdown on corruption, the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell has filed a 1,497-page detailed charge sheet against a doctor working as an Associate Professor at Diphu Medical College and another individual. The charges follow a comprehensive 52-day investigation into allegations of financial irregularities, forgery, and misuse of official authority.

The charge sheet, submitted to the relevant court, accuses Dr. Nath of possessing unaccounted wealth totaling ₹12.50 crore. Investigators discovered that his total assets exceeded his known sources of income by a staggering 185%, indicating a significant case of disproportionate assets, a violation of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

As per the recent media reports by India Today NE, Dr. Nath, an Associate Professor at Diphu Medical College, was initially arrested by Mangaldoi Police after a complaint was lodged by Dr. Rupam Mahanta, proprietor of JNSM Hospital. Dr. Mahanta accused Nath of forging his signature in documents submitted to the CM Vigilance Cell.

Following his arrest by Mangaldoi Police, the doctor was placed in judicial custody. Raids on his properties uncovered ₹8–9 lakh in cash, prompting the use of a bank-grade cash-counting machine. Investigators also unearthed links to multiple private hospitals in which the doctor allegedly held financial stakes, raising red flags about the potential misuse of his official post. The Assam Medical Council responded swiftly, suspending Dr. Nath’s medical registration for six months and ordering him to surrender all official documents within a week.

Adding to his legal woes are allegations of bigamy. Dr. Nath’s first wife has accused him of marrying a second woman without obtaining a legal divorce. Authorities are currently investigating whether she received any additional illegal benefits from the doctor, which could further complicate the already high-profile case.

According to India Today NE, Dr. Nath, previously suspended for negligence at Diphu Medical College, now faces multiple legal proceedings as the investigation widens. The case has drawn public attention due to its far-reaching implications in the state's healthcare and administrative sectors.
