Bihar hikes stipend for PG medical students: 1st year to Rs 92,800, 2nd year Rs 1.02 lakh, 3rd year Rs 1.12 lakh

Patna: In a recent development, the Bihar State Health Department has increased the monthly stipend of postgraduate (PG) medical students serving in government medical colleges and hospitals across the state.

As per the decision, the monthly stipend for first-year PG students has been increased from Rs 82,000 to Rs 92,800. For second-year students, it has been raised from Rs 90,200 to Rs 1,02,000 per month. Third-year PG medical students will now receive Rs 1,12,200 per month, up from their previous stipend of Rs 99,220.

The revised rates will take effect retroactively from January 1, 2026, according to an official statement posted on the social media platform X.

While announcing the revised stipend structure, the Bihar Health Department in the X post said that the increase is aimed at providing better financial support to PG medical students as they play an active role in patient care and hospital services while working under the supervision of senior doctors.

"A major boon for PG medical students in Bihar, with a significant increase in the stipend for PG students. An important decision by the Bihar government. PG students who play an active role in patient treatment and hospital services under the supervision of senior doctors. They will receive better economic cooperation and encouragement for quality human resources in the field of medical education," the health department further stated in the post. 

“PG students are future specialist doctors and have an important role in the state’s healthcare system. The increase in stipend would encourage them and help create a better environment for medical education,” Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar said, according to the statement, PTI reported. 

The state government’s objective is not only to increase the number of medical institutions but also to develop specialised medical manpower capable of providing better and quality healthcare services to the people, he added. 

This comes a day after the state government increased the monthly honoraria to contractual professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and resident doctors.

Medical Dialogues had reported that the monthly honorarium for contractual professors has been increased from Rs 1.80 lakh to Rs 2.07 lakh. Contractual associate professors will now receive Rs 1.55 lakh, up from Rs 1.35 lakh, while the honorarium for assistant professors has been raised from Rs 1.10 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh. The government has also revised the monthly honorarium for senior residents and tutors to Rs 1.15 lakh. The honorarium for junior residents has been increased from Rs 65,000 to Rs 75,000.
