Bihar Govt revises honorarium for contractual faculty, resident doctors
Patna: State-run medical colleges and hospitals in Bihar will now pay higher monthly honoraria to contractual professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and resident doctors, following a state government's decision to revise their remuneration.
According to an order issued by the health department, the monthly honorarium for contractual professors has been increased from Rs 1.80 lakh to Rs 2.07 lakh. Contractual associate professors will now receive Rs 1.55 lakh, up from Rs 1.35 lakh, while the honorarium for assistant professors has been raised from Rs 1.10 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh, reports The Daily.

The government has also revised the monthly honorarium for senior residents and tutors to Rs 1.15 lakh. The honorarium for junior residents has been increased from Rs 65,000 to Rs 75,000.
The revised rates will be effective retrospectively from September 1, 2026, the health department said. The proposal was approved following recommendations of the authorised committee and approval from the competent authority.
The department has directed the concerned medical colleges and hospitals to implement the revised honorarium rates.
Speaking to TOI, Health Minister Nishant Kumar said the govt was taking measures to strengthen the healthcare and medical education system. “Contractual professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior residents and junior residents play an important role in the functioning of govt medical colleges. Keeping in view their contributions, the govt has decided to increase their honorarium,” Nishant said.
He added that the decision would provide an incentive to medical professionals and strengthen the availability of specialised and qualified human resources at government medical colleges.
The health department said the increase was intended to support the functioning of state-run medical colleges and hospitals by helping attract and retain qualified contractual faculty and resident doctors.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that critically injured patients at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) could soon receive coordinated trauma care within 15 minutes of arrival, with the hospital preparing a proposal to establish a Level-1 trauma centre.
