Thrissur: An FIR has been registered against a doctor and a male nurse due to accusations of medical negligence following the development of weakness in a seven-year-old boy's left foot due to inconsistent administration of injections.

Following the accusations, the doctor has been terminated from his service at Taluk Hospital, Chavakkad based on an inquiry report. The team was formed to probe the matter at the direction of Thrissur District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr TP Sreedevi.

The incident took place after the boy, a Class II student at St Thomas LP School, Palayur was taken to the hospital by his mother due to a headache on December 1. After reaching the hospital, the boy vomited at the OPD. Observing the boy's condition, the accused doctor prescribed two medicines to the boy, one for the headache and the other for vomiting.

According to the boy's mother, the male nurse rashly administered the first injections to his hand causing extreme pain. Later, the nurse gave him his second injection which was again rashly administered on the buttocks.

Moments later, the boy's mother noticed that he was unable to walk after receiving the two injections. The mother claimed that he was experiencing weakness in the left foot.

The severity of the situation led the family to take the boy to Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode a few days later, where detailed examinations revealed that the nerve conduction study suggested severe left common peroneal motor neuropathy.

Following this, the family members of the boy approached the police and the hospital authorities seeking action against the duo accused.

This incident involving the administration of injections leading to severe consequences for a seven-year-old boy prompted the DMO to constitute the inquiry team. The report regarding the allegations made against the doctor and the male nurse was submitted to the Director of Health Services (DHS) by the investigating team.

It is expected that further action will be taken against the two based on a detailed assessment of the report submitted by the inquiry team.

Speaking to TOI, DHS Dr KJ Reena said "We have received the report from the DMO and will take a decision after a detailed assessment."
