Gangtok: A cardiologist attached to government-run New STNM Hospital, who attempted to rescue a female sanitation worker of the facility from an enraged man, was brutally repeatedly stabbed with a knife, police said.

The assaulter Thinley Bhutia – a 42-year-old divorcee - claimed he was having an affair with Kala Chhetri (worker) for the past year. She used to visit his house often. But on Tuesday, he got upset as she suddenly refused to talk to him and did not visit his house and the lovers' tiff took a gruesome turn, reports UNI.

"They had a talk over the phone after which the man met the woman on the third floor of the hospital when he was seen assaulting her, Dr Sanjay Upreti, a cardiologist, tried to come to her rescue, and was also attacked,' said the police.

Witnesses said the doctor was stabbed when he tried to help the woman who appeared to be the attacker's primary target.

BK Tamang, deputy inspector general and spokesperson of Sikkim Police, told HT, "The attacker first stabbed Kala Chhetri, a safai karmachari, multiple times and then stabbed Sanjay Upreti, a doctor from the cardiology department."

However, there was more twist to the tale, as Bhutia claimed he had carried the knife to the hospital to attack his brother-in-law. But, in a fit of rage, he happened to attack the cardiologist and Chettri.

The culprit has been arrested. Apparently, there was no conspiracy involved, the police said.

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang has condemned the incident and directed the police to take the strictest possible action as per law.

"The murderous attack is highly condemnable. The attacker has been arrested. We will ensure that he gets stringent punishment," he said.

The victims are in serious condition and undergoing treatment at the hospital, reports HT.
