Chennai: Dr J Sangumani appointed as new Director of Medical Education
Chennai: Dr J Sangumani, Dean of Government Virudhunagar Medical College has been appointed as the new Director of Medical Education & Research (DME) by the Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Department on Tuesday.
He has been appointed as the new DME for period one year after a vacancy of nearly two weeks. Previously, Dr R. Shanthimalar was in charge of the position and retired on October 31.
An order issued by the state Health Department mentioned "Dr J Sangumani, dean, Government Virudhunagar Medical College, Virudhunagar, is regularly promoted and appointed as Director of Medical Education and Research, Office of the Director of Medical Education and Research, Chennai vice Dr R Shanthimalar retired."

"Accordingly, the government issue the following promotion and posting orders with immediate effect," reads the order.
In another order, the department revealed that the former DME had submitted the names of five eligible candidates for consideration: R. Balajinathan, dean of Government Thanjavur Medical College; H. Muthukrishnan, dean of Government Ariyalur Medical College; R. Murugesan, dean of Government Tiruppur Medical College; J. Sangumani, dean of Government Virudhunagar Medical College; and R. Suganthy Rajakumari, dean of Government Dindigul Medical College.
As per a TH news report, three medical officers who are senior to him — Dr Balajinathan, Dr Muthukrishnan and Dr Murugesan — have been appointed as Officers on Special Duty in the cadre of DME.
The government chose Dr. Sangumani based on “merit and ability”.
"The Government approved a regular panel consisting of Dr J Sangumani, Dean, Government Virudhunagar Medical College for the post of Director of Medical Education and Research for the year 2023-24," mentioned the order.
