Class 12 pass Quack arrested in Pune after practising medicine for 2 years

Pune: In a shocking incident, a 39-year-old Class 12 pass man from Chhattisgarh has been arrested in Pune’s Ravet for allegedly practising medicine without a recognised medical qualification, administering injections and selling medicines to patients. 

The accused has been living in Pune for the past six years. Police said he had been residing in Ravet for the last two years, where he allegedly operated an illegal clinic that mainly catered to labourers working in the area, reports The Daily.

According to police, the accused had previously worked as a labourer before allegedly starting to treat fellow workers and other residents. He is accused of examining patients, prescribing and selling medicines and administering injections despite not holding a recognised medical degree.

The alleged illegal practice came to light after police received information about a person practising medicine without the required qualifications. Acting on the information, police reached an area near Shreenath Hospital at Pandhare Vasti in Punawale at around 12.10 am on August 16. The accused was allegedly found examining patients and providing treatment.

The complaint was filed by Dr Nandkumar Manohar More, a medical officer. According to news reports, a case has been registered at Ravet Police Station under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1961 and other applicable offences relating to cheating and personation. The accused was produced before the court and has been remanded to three days of police custody.

Speaking to Pune Times Mirror, Police Sub-Inspector Rahul Khile, who is investigating the case, said, “The accused is a Class 12 pass and has no recognised medical qualification. He had been working as a labourer and allegedly started treating labourers in the area. We are investigating how long he had been practising, the number of patients he treated and the source of the medicines and injections recovered from him.”

Police are also probing whether the accused had projected himself as a qualified doctor and whether any patient suffered complications or harm after receiving treatment from him.

The investigation will further focus on the illegal clinic, the medicines and injections recovered, and the patients who had sought treatment from the accused.
