Coimbatore doctor arrested over alleged embezzlement of 900 gold sovereigns

Coimbatore: A doctor has been arrested by the City Crime Branch (CCB-Coimbatore) for allegedly embezzling around 900 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth several crore rupees belonging to his father-in-law. 

The case was registered following a complaint by a 67-year-old businessman from Ganpathy Nagar, who alleged that the doctor had been entrusted with the keys to a locker and bureau containing around 1,000 sovereigns of jewellery at his residence. 

According to the complaint, the accused married the businessman’s daughter, who is also a doctor, in 2024. The complainant alleged that a large portion of the jewellery went missing while it was in the accused’s possession.

According to a report by The Hindu, the complainant alleged that jewellery went missing from the bureau, and the accused returned only 100 sovereigns in June this year when he demanded the gold back. The complainant also alleged that the accused intimidated him for demanding the jewellery. 

The City Crime Branch had registered a case against the doctor, his mother and sister on July 3 over allegations including criminal breach of trust and other offences. The doctor was subsequently arrested as part of the investigation.  

Police are now probing the alleged disappearance of the jewellery and the roles of the three accused in the case.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a 41-year-old man was arrested by the Avalahalli police for allegedly stealing gold ornaments worth over Rs 1 crore belonging to a US-based doctor from a marriage hall on Old Madras Road in Bengaluru's Bidarahalli area. The accused, a resident of Bidarahalli near Kadugodi, was arrested on July 8 at a marriage hall near Katamnallur Cross. Police recovered around 340 grams of gold ornaments and a car allegedly used in the crime, with the total value of the seized items estimated at around Rs 47 lakh.
