Thane doctor duped of Rs 60,000 by cyber fraudster
Thane: A doctor from Maharashtra's Thane city was allegedly duped of Rs 60,000 by a cyber fraudster in an online delivery scam, officials said on Saturday. Following his complaint, police have registered a case in connection with the fraud.
According to the complainant, a resident of Mumbra, he had purchased items online but did not receive the delivery. When he searched online for customer care assistance, he was unable to find a valid number.
Soon after, an unknown individual contacted him via WhatsApp, posing as a customer care executive.

According to the PTI report, the fraudster instructed the doctor to download a file, which later turned out to be a malicious APK file, sent to his phone under the pretext of resolving the delivery issue. Upon downloading and installing the application, the doctor’s phone briefly turned off, the police said.
When the device restarted, he received bank notification alerts informing him that Rs 60,000 had been unauthorisedly debited from his account, police said.
Following his complaint, the Mumbra police registered an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation into the case was underway.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a 67-year-old retired government doctor in Coimbatore allegedly lost Rs 98 lakh after cyber fraudsters posing as senior police and CBI officials threatened her with a fake 'digital arrest'. The retired woman doctor, who lives in Sivananda colony with her elderly mother, received a WhatsApp video call in June. The callers allegedly told her that illegal money transfers had been made using a bank account in her name.
The fraudsters then told her that she was under “digital arrest” and ordered her to stay inside her home until their investigation was completed.
