Thamarassery: Tension gripped the Government Taluk Hospital at Thamarassery on Wednesday after a doctor was allegedly attacked with a machete by the father of a young girl who had died of amoebic meningoencephalitis in August.

The incident has sparked outrage and led to a flash strike call by the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) in Kozhikode district. Speaking to the Hindu, KGMOA functionaries said all services, except emergency care, would be boycotted. However, at the Thamarassery Taluk Hospital, no services would be offered, they added.

According to the news reports, the doctor was speaking with colleagues and a patient when the child’s father suddenly attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon, striking him on the head. The attacker blamed the doctor for the death of his daughter before being overpowered by others present and subsequently taken into police custody.

The doctor received initial treatment at the hospital and was later transferred to a private facility for further care.

The young girl was initially admitted to the Thamarassery Taluk Hospital with fever symptoms. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she succumbed to amoebic meningoencephalitis on August 14 while being transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Kozhikode. Family members have accused the taluk hospital of negligence, claiming that the girl did not receive proper treatment during her stay.

Two of the girl’s siblings were also infected with the same disease but have since recovered.
