Doctor found dead at Guwahati Hospital, family alleges harassment and threats

Guwahati: Police are investigating the death of a 41-year-old ICU physician who was found unresponsive inside a private super-speciality hospital in Guwahati, after his family alleged that he had been subjected to repeated harassment and threats by a woman with whom he had been in a relationship and her husband.

The doctor's father has filed a police complaint against the woman and her husband, alleging that repeated calls, WhatsApp messages and threats had affected his son's mental well-being. Police have since registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the death.

According to the complaint, the doctor became acquainted with the woman in 2025, and the two subsequently entered into a consensual relationship. The family alleged that the doctor later decided to end the relationship after learning that the woman was married and had a child.

However, the woman allegedly continued contacting him through phone calls and WhatsApp messages. The family further alleged that she threatened to harm herself and visited the doctor's workplace on several occasions.

The complaint also alleges that the woman's husband visited the hospital and threatened the doctor on June 12 and August 18.

The family approached Bhangagarh Police Station with the complaint on August 19. Police subsequently registered an FIR against the woman and her husband. The allegations have not been established in court and are currently under investigation.

The physician had been working at the private hospital for several years and was associated with emergency medicine and ICU services.

He was reportedly at the hospital on Tuesday night. In the early hours of Wednesday, he was found unresponsive inside an ICU chamber in the hospital's new building. The hospital authorities informed the police after he was found.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a 41-year-old doctor working at a private hospital in Guwahati was found dead in an ICU room on Wednesday morning, prompting police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Hospital authorities informed the police following the discovery. Police personnel subsequently visited the hospital and spoke with staff members as part of the preliminary investigation. His body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

While some reports have described the death as suicide, authorities have not yet officially established the cause and manner of death. The post-mortem findings and other investigative evidence are expected to be important in determining what happened.

A purported audio recording of a conversation between the doctor and the woman has also surfaced on social media. In the recording, a man, allegedly the doctor, tells the woman that he no longer wants to speak to her or continue the relationship. The woman then asks him to speak to her and apologises for what had happened earlier. The recording has not been independently verified, reports NDTV.

Police are investigating the allegations made by the doctor’s family, the FIR, and the events preceding his death. Investigators are also expected to examine whether the alleged harassment or threats had any connection with his death.
