Lucknow gynaecologist transferred over alleged Rs 6,000 demand for C-section delivery

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has taken action against a gynaecologist and an operation theatre attendant after the family of a pregnant woman was allegedly asked to pay Rs 6,000 for a caesarean delivery at a government hospital in Lucknow. The action follows the circulation of a video showing the alleged demand.

The incident was reported at Ram Sagar Mishra Combined Hospital in Bakshi Ka Talab, where the woman had been admitted for delivery. According to the allegations, the doctor advised a caesarean section and the woman was taken to the operation theatre. Her family was then allegedly asked to pay Rs 6,000.

After the video surfaced, the Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister ordered action against those allegedly involved. The accused obstetrician and gynaecologist was transferred to Mal CHC, while the OT attendant was dismissed from service. “Strict action would be taken against those who harass patients and their attendants,” the Deputy Chief Minister said, according to Hindustan Times.

When the family expressed their inability to arrange the money, they were allegedly told that the surgery would be postponed and advised to take the woman to another hospital.  

The government has also initiated a wider crackdown on alleged misconduct and negligence among government doctors. In a separate action, 34 medical officers have been recommended for disciplinary action for prolonged absence from duty, alleged negligence in clinical work, disobedience of senior officials and inappropriate behaviour with patients.   

Out of the 34 doctors, 26 who were allegedly absent for prolonged periods have been recommended for dismissal, while departmental proceedings have been ordered against the remaining eight. Pathak has directed the Additional Chief Secretary, Medical, Health and Family Welfare, to initiate the proceedings.  

“The health department is a highly sensitive department,” Dy CM said, warning that medical officers and employees found failing in their duties or tarnishing the government’s image would face strict action. 

The minister said improving healthcare delivery remains a priority and that officials found responsible for negligence or laxity in patient care would not be spared.
