Panaji: Renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Sharada Mulgaonkar Patil has been appointed as the new president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Goa State Branch.

The IMA Goa State Branch held its State Installation Ceremony at BITS Goa on Sunday, where Dr Patil was installed as the new president.

Upon assuming charge, Dr Patil announced the theme for her term, “Embracing Neurodiversity – Together We Care, Connect and Champion.” She said there is a strong need to create awareness, understanding and inclusive healthcare for people with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Speaking at the event, Patil told TOI, Neurodiversity is a natural variation of the human brain, and as doctors, it is our responsibility to create healthcare systems that are empathetic, accessible, and inclusive. Together we must care, connect, and champion the needs of every individual."

She pointed out that lack of information about neurodiversity causes difficulties for both parents and children. As a result, she said, "IMA has taken this initiative, a small step. If we can make a small change in the lives of the neurodiverse and their families, we would achieve our target."

Dr Patil added that people with conditions like autism, ADHD and learning disabilities often struggle to get proper medical care. Doctors, she said, must make sure that healthcare services are sensitive, accessible and inclusive.

The event was attended by Health Secretary Yetindra Maralkar, senior doctors, former IMA office-bearers, BITS Goa Dean Meenal Kaushik and other guests.

Speaking at the event, Health Secretary Yetindra Maralkar said police and judicial authorities need proper training to deal with cases of violence against doctors. He said attacks on doctors are increasing and are unacceptable.

“We need strict rules so that such things are not repeated. We are thinking of carrying out amendments to protect doctors from attacks,” he said.

He also said, "Goa has alarming figures—nearly 10% of its population is neurodiverse. It’s a big number. All doctors are doing excellent work to embrace this neurodiversity in Goa, and I hope under the able leadership of Patil, we will do justice to these people and give a hand to the families of the neurodiverse."
