New Delhi: In a remarkable milestone, Dr Nirupam Madaan has become the first woman to be appointed as the new Medical Superintendent (MS) of the premier health institution, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. 

This appointment marks a historic moment as it is the first time in the 68 years of the institute's existence that a female doctor has assumed this role in India's leading central tertiary care hospital.

The decision was made after her successful interview on December 24th of last year. She has been appointed on a deputation basis at this Institute, on the recommendation of the Standing Selection Committee.

A memorandum issued by the Director of AIIMS Delhi, M Srinivas on January 19 mentioned, "AIIMS is pleased to approve the appointment of Dr Nirupam Madaan to the post of Medical Superintendent [On deputation basis) in Pay Level-14-A-Rs.168900-220400/- (Plus NPA as per rules) as per 7th CPC in the Pay Matrix plus other usual allowances as are admissible to the Central Government Servants of her status stationed at Delhi/New Delhi at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences."

Dr Nirupam has been appointed to the position for a duration of 3 years, or until further notice, and has been granted a 15-day timeframe to assume the role.

"If the offer is acceptable to her on the aforesaid conditions, she may please communicate her acceptance to the undersigned immediately and also report herself for duty as early as possible, but not later than 17.02.2024. In case, she does not send her acceptance within 15 days or does not join the post by the stipulated date, she should consider this offer of appointment will stand cancelled /withdrawn," adds the memorandum.

As per a news report in Early Times, Dr Nirupam hails from Jammu and is an alumnus of Jammu Medical College after which she obtained her MD in Hospital Administration (MHA) from SKIMS, Kashmir, from where she got selected for senior residency at AIIMS.

She comes from a lineage of accomplished individuals who have excelled as educators and technocrats for the past three generations, contributing significantly to the development of our nation.

Earlier, she served as the additional Medical Superintendent of the JPNA Trauma Centre, which played a crucial role as the designated COVID hospital of AIIMS during the challenging times of the pandemic.

Her success story of attaining this position within the institution will serve as a source of inspiration for numerous women in the medical field across the nation.

Meanwhile, the Resident Doctors’ Association of AIIMS, New Delhi have congratulated her on her new appointment by sharing a post on X- "AIIMS RDA congratulates Dr Nirupam Madaan on her appointment as the Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Delhi."
