Gauhati Medical College doctor detained after woman alleges sexual assault
Sexual Assault
Guwahati: In a disturbing incident, a woman has accused a doctor at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) of sexually assaulting her during a consultation on October 15. Police have detained the doctor and are examining the hospital’s CCTV footage.
According to the woman’s complaint, she had visited the hospital to show the doctor medical reports belonging to her fiancé. She alleged that the doctor asked her aunt, who had accompanied her, to wait outside his cabin before asking her personal questions about her boyfriend and their physical relationship.
According to NDTV, the woman further alleged that the doctor asked her to lie down for an examination of her lower abdomen and chest. When she expressed discomfort about removing her clothes, he allegedly pulled down her trousers and touched her private parts without her consent. She also accused him of forcing her to touch his private parts.
Recounting the alleged incident, the woman said she became distressed but initially hesitated to object because he was a doctor. She said she eventually told him that she was uncomfortable. The doctor then allegedly asked her to get dressed and questioned her about whether she had experienced any sexual feelings.
"I started feeling uncomfortable, but I did not say anything because he was a doctor. After that, he touched me inappropriately in that area. We know the difference between a good touch and a bad touch. That was a bad touch. Then I told him that I was not feeling comfortable . . . I had gone there only to show my boyfriend's medical reports. I never expected something like this to happen," she said, NDTV reported.
The woman subsequently lodged complaints at Bhangagarh Police Station and the Women’s Police Station in Guwahati. Police detained the doctor in connection with the allegations and examined the hospital's CCTV footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
A case has been registered under Sections 68, 72 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), bearing case number 117/26.
The allegations remain under investigation. The doctor’s response was not available at the time of reporting, and the police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
