GTB Hospital Associate Professor Attacked with Liquor Bottle, Suffers Head Injury

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a senior faculty member from the Medicine Department of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital was assaulted yesterday by three unidentified men near Gate 12 of the GTB Campus.
Due to the attack, Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, who is an Associate Professor at the institute, received a head injury.
Police have arrested three accused involved in the incident, the President of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of University College of Medical Sciences & Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Dr. Rajat Sharma, informed Medical Dialogues. All the accused are currently in police custody.
The incident took place at around 9 PM on Friday. At that time, Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, who is also the Hostel Warden, was doing rounds inside the campus. He found the three accused publicly drinking on the campus.
Speaking to PTI, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), Prashant Gautam, informed, "The three men who came on two motorcycles to visit a patient at the hospital on Friday evening were stopped by RWA members while they were exiting through the residential colony gate."
Dr Kuldeep and four to five RWA (Resident Welfare Association) members confronted the visitors and objected to them using the gate meant for the colony residents.
When the doctors confronted them, a heated exchange ensued. The accused attacked the doctor with a liquor bottle, and this resulted in a head injury- a laceration.
Police informed PTI that the situation soon evolved into a scuffle, and Dr. Kuldeep sustained a minor injury near his forehead

"Dr. Kuldeep found out that a few people are there on campus drinking. He confronted them and then these people, they went into a fighting mode and smashed the bottle. Then, he got injured and was brought to the casualty," RDA President Dr Sharma informed Medical Dialogues.
"We informed the police first-hand, and after that, the police reached there," Dr Sharma mentioned, further adding, "The Police was able to get hold of them." The condition of Dr. Kuldeep is currently stable, informed Dr. Sharma.
Commenting on the matter, Dr. Nischal Yathagiri, Vice-President of RDA, added, "The perpetrators have been arrested but this marks a grave danger for any and all healthcare providers on campus. Further course of action will be duly informed in the morning. The Teachers association and RDA of UCMS & GTBH are here on site handling the situation."
Meanwhile, commenting on the matter, an official told PTI, "One of the three men involved in the incident was formerly a resident of the colony. They alleged that when they were trying to exit the premises, the gate was deliberately shut by the security guard and the complainant, following which they were surrounded and not allowed to leave."
Police said the matter is being investigated and suitable action will be taken based on the findings of the enquiry. A meeting with the Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital has also been scheduled to discuss the issue, the DCP said.
