Guwahati woman dies during IVF treatment, family alleges medical negligence

Guwahati: Medical negligence has been alleged by the family of a woman who died after her health deteriorated while undergoing IVF treatment at a private fertility centre in Guwahati.
The deceased, a resident of Rahmaria in Chabua, had reportedly been undergoing IVF-related treatment at Indira IVF Centre in Lachit Nagar since May. According to the family, the woman developed vomiting and diarrhoea after taking a tablet prescribed by the doctor on the night of September 19. Her condition allegedly worsened during the night, reports The Daily.

The family alleged that despite her deteriorating condition, the nurse on duty at the centre did not provide adequate medical attention. Her relatives subsequently took her to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) the following morning, where doctors declared her dead.
The family has also raised questions over the treatment and payments involved. They claimed that they had initially paid Rs 3 lakh for the treatment and were subsequently asked to arrange another Rs 3 lakh.
According to the family, they were prepared to make the additional payment and continue the treatment. However, they alleged that the woman’s health deteriorated despite their willingness to proceed with the treatment and claimed that improper treatment and delayed medical attention may have caused her death.
They further alleged that there was confusion over her test results. The family claimed they were informed around 45 days earlier that she had tested positive, but were later told that the result was negative.
Following the death, the family approached Panbazar Police Station and filed a complaint seeking an investigation into the circumstances of the woman’s death and action against those found responsible. “ The case is under investigation, and we can’t disclose all the details now,” Panbazar Police officials said, reports GPlus.
As per India Today NE, the family has also called for stricter regulation and monitoring of private IVF and fertility centres, alleging that the growing number of such facilities requires greater accountability.
The allegations have not been independently established. The medical circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, including the treatment provided and the alleged delay in medical attention, will have to be examined by the authorities as part of the investigation.
