Hassan: A PG medico in the surgery department of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Hassan has alleged harassment and ragging by senior residents.

According to a message, as posted on social media, shared by a resident highlighting the alleged harassment faced by his friend and other junior residents, the student claimed that the entire department has created a toxic work environment for the junior postgraduate doctors.

The resident claimed that second- and third-year PGs are forcing first-year residents to work till 2 AM daily in the casualty department.

The resident also alleged that junior doctors are required to wear ties and formal clothes throughout the day while working in casualty, which they described as unnecessary and stressful during long duty hours.

Further, the resident claimed that even after completing their late-night duties, they are called to the rooms of senior PGs where they are allegedly ragged and harassed.

The message also alleged that the harassment often happens in front of patients, attendants, nursing staff, and interns, causing humiliation to the junior residents.

The resident further claimed that the situation has already forced one co-resident to leave the course due to the toxic environment and alleged that consultants in the department are not supporting the junior doctors.

Medical Dialogues had earlier stated that Resident doctors of the Department of Orthopaedics at Dr M K Shah Medical College and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, have made serious allegations of physical and mental harassment against an Assistant Professor.

Filing an online complaint against the concerned professor to the National Medical Commission's Anti-ragging Cell, the residents claimed that they were being subjected to severe mental and physical abuse, along with constant mental harassment and threats for years. The doctors further alleged that the mental harassment became so severe that some of them developed depression and even had suicidal thoughts.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the NMC issued a notice to the college, and the college authorities constituted a three-member committee to investigate the allegations. The accused professor has been temporarily sent on leave while an inquiry is being conducted.
