Himachal Cabinet nod to hiring retired faculty in new medical colleges
Shimla: To tackle the acute shortage of experienced faculty, the Himachal Pradesh cabinet has approved a proposal to reappoint retired professors in both clinical and non-clinical specialities in newly established government medical colleges.
This will help address the shortage of teaching staff across various clinical and non-clinical specialities in the newly established medical colleges like Nahan, Chamba, Hamirpur, and Nerchowk.
As per an UNI report, the Department of Medical Education and Research issued an official communication highlighting that the state has been facing a significant gap in senior-level teaching staff, particularly professors, which is critical for maintaining academic standards, ensuring quality patient care, and meeting regulatory norms.

Following this, the medical education department submitted a proposal about re-engaging retired professors in new medical colleges.
After reviewing the proposal, the cabinet ministers in a meeting on Friday gave nod to the proposal. The professors will receive Rs 2.5 lakh per month along with an incentive of Rs 50,000. Approval was also granted to provide an honorarium of Rs 3 lakh to radiology professors in these colleges, reports HT.
Medical Dialogues also reported that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the retirement age for professors in government medical colleges will be increased to 65 years for the next three years to address the ongoing shortage of faculty across Himachal Pradesh.
To further strengthen the system, the government will designate assistant and associate professors wherever required. In addition, postgraduate (PG) seats are being significantly increased across medical colleges, including 57 in Tanda, 29 in Mandi, 32 in Nahan, 33 in Chamba, 67 in Hamirpur, and 96 in Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla. This expansion is expected to improve institutional efficiency, enhance training capacity, and ultimately lead to better patient care.
