Himachal Pradesh defers retirement of medical officers, faculty to March 31, 2027

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has extended the retirement dates of medical officers and teaching faculty who were scheduled to retire before March 31, 2027, allowing them to continue in government service until the specified date.

The Finance Department notified the decision through an amendment to the Fundamental (Himachal Pradesh) Amendment Rules, 2026. The change has been incorporated into Rule 56 of the rules. 

Under the amended provision, Medical Officers working under the Health and Family Welfare Department and faculty members of the Medical Education Department whose retirement falls before March 31, 2027, will retire on March 31, 2027, in the public interest.

By retaining eligible Medical Officers and teaching faculty until a common retirement date, the government is expected to maintain the availability of experienced personnel across hospitals and medical institutions during the period.  

The amendment applies specifically to Medical Officers of the Health and Family Welfare Department and faculty members of the Medical Education Department who are otherwise due to retire before the specified date.  

According to a report by The Tribune, the move is aimed at helping the state address the shortage of doctors in government healthcare facilities. Several health institutions, particularly those located in tribal, remote and difficult areas, face staffing gaps that can affect access to medical services for local residents. Similarly, the teaching faculty of the Medical Education Department who were otherwise due to retire before March 31, 2027, will continue in service until the revised date of superannuation.

The government’s decision comes against the backdrop of continuing manpower challenges in Himachal Pradesh’s public healthcare system, where difficult terrain and remote locations can make it challenging to maintain adequate medical staffing.
