Jind police arrest 2 over alleged Rs 1 crore extortion threat to doctor
Jind: Police have arrested two men for allegedly demanding Rs 1 crore in extortion from a doctor associated with a private hospital in Jind, Haryana. The threat was reportedly sent via WhatsApp.
According to police, the two accused met on Instagram about a week before the alleged crime and had never met in person. Investigators said they discussed and planned the extortion attempt through social media.
Police alleged that the accused targeted the private hospital and sent an extortion message to the WhatsApp number of the hospital owner's assistant. The message reportedly demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened serious consequences if the money was not paid.
The accused have been identified as a resident of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, and another from Hansi in Haryana.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the police said the youths, driven by a desire to get rich overnight, planned the ransom plan shortly after connecting online. They sent a message to the WhatsApp number of the hospital owner’s assistant, demanding ₹1 crore as extortion and threatening serious consequences if the amount was not paid.
Following a complaint from the hospital management, a team of the Crime Investigation Agency-1 (CIA-1) began tracking the suspects using technical surveillance.
The investigation led police to their locations, following which both men were arrested on Tuesday.
Police said the accused already has a case registered against him under the Arms Act and was taken into custody in Uttar Pradesh. The other accused was reportedly preparing for BSc Nursing.
Investigators are now examining the digital communication between the two accused and other details of the alleged extortion attempt to establish the full sequence of events and determine whether anyone else was involved.
The case highlights how social media platforms can allegedly be used to establish contact and plan criminal activities without the accused having met each other physically.
