Organ Donation Saves Multiple Lives

Bhopal: A 42-year-old Ayurvedic practitioner from Kerala gave a new lease of life to three patients in Bhopal after her family decided to donate her organs following her brain-stem death.

The doctor had been living and working in the city for the past six months when she suffered a critical brain haemorrhage and was admitted to a private hospital. Doctors later declared her brain-stem dead after exhaustive evaluation procedures.

Following counselling sessions conducted by the hospital’s medical team, the doctor’s family consented to organ donation. Hospital authorities said the entire process was conducted according to the guidelines laid down by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), which governs organ retrieval and transplantation procedures across the country. Officials said all required legal formalities and medical certifications were completed before the organs were retrieved, reports Free Press Journal.

Doctors involved in the transplant process stated that the donor’s liver and one kidney were transplanted into patients admitted to the same private hospital where she was undergoing treatment. The second kidney was allocated to another private hospital in Bhopal for transplantation into a patient in urgent need of an organ transplant. Medical teams coordinated the retrieval, preservation and transportation procedures to ensure that the organs were transplanted within the required timeframe, according to the Times of India.

Dr Rakesh Bharagav, a member of the Madhya Pradesh State Advisory Committee for Organ Donation and the MP State Authorization Committee for Organ Donations, stated that the Ayurvedic doctor’s liver and both kidneys were successfully donated for transplantation. He said the liver and one kidney were transplanted at the same hospital where she was admitted, while the second kidney was assigned to another hospital in Bhopal for a patient awaiting a transplant.

Doctors and officials described the organ donation as a significant act of humanity and public awareness toward organ donation. Medical experts said donations in brain-stem death cases can save several lives and require close coordination among doctors, transplant teams, legal authorities and the donor’s family. Police personnel also honoured the deceased doctor with a ceremonial farewell and full state honours in recognition of her life-saving contribution through organ donation.
