IGIMS Patna medicos protest, suspend OPD services over detention of 2 junior doctors
Patna: After two junior doctors were detained following a clash between junior doctors and engineering department employees at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, the medicos staged a protest outside the Director's office, demanding that the FIR registered against the junior doctors be withdrawn and that they be released immediately.
The protest began in the morning yesterday, with students suspending the OPD services at the hospital. They warned that emergency services could also be disrupted if the detained doctors were not released and the FIR was not withdrawn by 3 pm.
The disruption caused inconvenience to patients visiting the hospital for treatment, as per the Patna Press media report.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that junior doctors and engineering department employees allegedly clashed at the institute, leaving three staff members injured and triggering panic within the hospital premises.
It has been reported that the injured employees sustained head injuries and were admitted to the emergency ward. The altercation reportedly broke out in the electrical department located on the first floor of the dental block. The situation led to chaos inside the hospital for nearly half an hour, with patients, attendants, and staff reportedly rushing for safety.
The incident is said to have escalated from a dispute that began on Wednesday evening when an electrical engineer had reportedly visited the radiology department for air conditioner repair work, and an altercation occurred with junior resident doctors. Sources alleged that the engineer was assaulted by a group of 10–20 doctors during the confrontation.
Following the incident, a complaint was submitted to the institute administration. Later, the engineer filed a complaint at the police station. Based on his complaint, the police registered a case against two junior doctors and several unidentified persons. This led to the detention of the two junior doctors.
