IGIMS Patna MBBS student allegedly assaulted by hospital staff, security guards over treatment delay dispute, RDA demands action

Patna: In a disturbing incident, a final-year MBBS student at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna was allegedly assaulted by hospital staff and security guards after a dispute over delayed treatment.

According to Patna press report, the student from the 2022 MBBS batch alleged that he was chased, beaten, dragged by his hair, and taken to a security room where he was pushed against a wall by guards and hospital staff.

The incident reportedly began at the Neurosurgery OPD when the student brought a relative in urgent need of medical attention. He showed his institute ID card and requested the hospital staff to expedite the patient’s appointment with a doctor.

However, after a prolonged delay, an argument allegedly broke out between the student and a staff member. The situation quickly escalated, and security personnel allegedly assaulted him.

He further alleged that even after the initial confrontation subsided, he was attacked again by another security guard when he later went to seek treatment for himself.

Following the incident, more than 150 medical students gathered inside the hospital premises and staged a protest, moving from the OPD to the control room and demanding action against those involved.

Later, the police arrived at the spot and intervened to control the situation.

To demand a police case in this regard, a delegation of medical students met IGIMS director Dr Binde Kumar and submitted a written complaint demanding the registration of a police case against those involved.

Taking action against the accused, the college administration suspended a security guard found prima facie responsible for the assault and constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, MBBS students and junior doctors warned that they would boycott hospital duties and launch a strike if strict legal action was not taken against all staff members and security personnel allegedly involved in the assault.

The IGIMS Resident Doctors Association supported the students and strongly condemned the alleged assault. The association said CCTV footage reportedly captured the entire incident and demanded strict action.

Commenting on this, Dr Rajat Kumar, president of the RDA, told Patna Press, "The student had been wearing his apron and institute ID card and had clearly identified himself to hospital staff and security personnel before the incident. Despite repeated requests for medical assistance for himself and his family member, the student was ignored and physically assaulted. The entire incident has been captured on CCTV footage. We demand immediate and strict action against those responsible."
