Maha Medical Council Elections: Why 72,000 doctors were removed from the list
Mumbai: As the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) elections are set for 26 April 2025, some members have raised concerns over the removal of nearly 72,000 doctors from the voters’ list. The issue has sparked unease within the medical community as the polling date approaches.
Registration with the MMC is mandatory for every medical graduate, and it must be renewed every five years. However, around 70,000 practitioners did not complete this renewal process, leading to the deletion of their names from the electoral rolls. The MMC currently has a total membership of approximately 1.3 lakh doctors, reports the Times of India.
The MMC is a quasi-judicial body responsible for overseeing the medical profession and addressing malpractice and negligence cases. MMC has asked the doctors to renew their membership to remain eligible for voting and other privileges. The elections were supposed to be conducted every five years, but it has been pending since 2022. Polls were scheduled for April 3, 2025, but got postponed.

Last year, Medical Dialogues reported that around 70,000 doctors in Maharashtra will be ineligible to vote in the upcoming MMC elections on April 3 due to the non-renewal of their licenses. The Council has officially announced elections to select nine new council members. The elections will take place at each district headquarters under the supervision of the District Collector on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
A few days ago, the Supreme Court ordered the holding of the MMC elections within three months. Issuing directions in this regard to a newly appointed returning officer (RO), the Apex Court said that the process would start from the beginning by the concerned RO while following all the required processes mandated by the law.
