Pune: After waiting for several months, Dr Vinayak Kale has finally received reinstatement as the dean of B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital. However, the reappointment is on a temporary basis.

An official order has been issued in this regard after the Bombay High Court upheld the order passed by the Maharashtra administrative tribunal to quash the appointment of Dr Sanjiv Thakur as dean of BJMC and SGH and repost Dr Kale as dean of the college.

A recent order issued by the Medical Education and Drugs Department of Maharashtra on Wednesday mentioned that Dr Kale has been given the temporary charge of the dean of BJMC and SGH pending the court's final decision. He is likely to take charge of the post soon.

According to a Indian Express report, Dr Kape was given the charge of the dean of BJMC on April 8, 2022. However, the Maharashtra administrative tribunal transferred him on January 13, 2023, to the Maharashtra Mental Health Institute as director-professor and Dr Sanjeev Thakur was appointed in his place as the dean of the college.

After serving nine months as the dean of the college, Dr Kale was opposed to the transfer decision. Hence, he moved to the tribunal challenging both transfer orders and the tribunal ruled in favour of Dr Kale. Therefore, he was ordered to be reinstated within a few weeks.

However, the case was moved to Bombay High Court after Dr Thakur filed a petition challenging the tribunal's decision. Following this, the court carefully observed the matter and upheld the decision of the tribunal to reinstate Dr Kale quashing Dr Thakur's plea on November 2023.

The court's decision came in the backdrop of the controversy surrounding the unnecessarily prolonged stay and escape of drug kingpin Lalit Patil from Sassoon on October 2.

Speaking to Indian Express, Dr Kale said “The state has issued an order, and I am satisfied. I hope to take charge at the earliest."

“My top priority as of now is to improve the image of the hospital. We will take all necessary steps to ensure that trust in the hospital is back," he told TOI
