Margherita: In a shocking incident, a male gynaecologist posted at Margherita Civil Hospital in Assam was allegedly tied to a pole and brutally thrashed by an angry mob after being accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a Hindu nurse from a private hospital, recording the act, blackmailing her with the video, and attempting to force her to convert to Islam.

The nurse alleged that the doctor had been harassing her for three months, pressuring her to read Namaz and convert to Islam. When she resisted, he allegedly assaulted her, even burning her with cigarettes. She further claimed that he forcibly fed her beef as punishment for refusing to convert. According to her statement, he initially raped her after spiking her drink and recorded the act. Later, he reportedly sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions by using the video to blackmail her.

The incident took place on February 22 when the doctor was brutally beaten outside the hospital after the matter came to light. According to the allegations, the woman, a 22-year-old nurse from the Gorkha community, was working at a private hospital in Margherita when she met with the Muslim doctor. As per an OpIndia news report, the doctor used to visit the private hospital where she worked and over time they became close.

The doctor, a government employee reportedly lured her with the promise of securing a government job at the Margherita Civil Hospital. Trusting him, she agreed and began working under his supervision as his personal assistant.

The matter took a dark turn when the nurse was allegedly called by the doctor to the hospital's OT for assistance in the evening. After the operation was over by late evening, he took her to a place and reportedly gave her something to drink, after which she fell unconscious. It is reported that the doctor at that time sexually assaulted her and recorded a video.

Following this, the nurse claimed that he used the video to blackmail her into repeated sexual exploitation like inappropriately touching her at work. Over time, he allegedly forced her to move into a rented accommodation in Tinsukia, where the abuse continued. The abuse reportedly continued for three months.

Unable to endure the pain any longer, the nurse decided to raise her voice and approached the Gorkha Students Union. She narrated the entire incident which enraged the students. After this, the students union and others reached the Margherita Civil Hospital on Saturday morning, took the doctor out and allegedly thrashed him.

After the police received reports about the attack, they immediately reached the spot and rescued the doctor. They took the doctor into custody, and a probe will begin soon after a case is registered based on the nurse's complaint.
