It has been reported that the doctor identified as Dr Aniljit Kamboj had been under security cover given by the Moga police since 2022, until recently, they withdrew the security cover after receiving no threats. The cover was given after the doctor in 2022 received extortion calls from Canada-based designated terrorist Lakhbir Singh Landa, an operative of the banned organization Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) who demanded Rs 1 crore from him. They threatened that if he failed to give the money, his life would be in danger.

The Moga police are actively investigating the case from all angles, with a focus on the possible links between the two accused and the terrorist group. They are also reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspects.

The incident took place on Friday afternoon when the victim's son, also a doctor, was present at the hospital. Two men came posing as patients, and one of them told Dr Kamboj that he was having some skin-related ailment. As soon as he bent down to check his leg, the other man who was standing behind opened fire at him.

Following this, the two miscreants fled the scene, and the doctor was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. He had undergone surgery for the wounds, but his condition remains critical till now.

A family member requesting anonymity told the Indian Express, "Kamboj was also given a security cover by the Moga Police, but the lone gunman was withdrawn some months ago."

Inspector Gurwinder Singh Bhullar, SHO Kot Ise Khan, said, "The case is being probed from all angles, including Landa’s alleged involvement. Prima facie, the man who opened fire had two weapons, and he opened fire with both. An FIR for attempt to murder has been registered at Kot Ise Khan police station on the statement of Chahat. We will nominate names of the accused as the probe progresses."

Moga SP (investigation) Bal Krishan Singla said, "An FIR was registered in 2022 on the family’s complaint after they had received threat calls. Landa was nominated as an accused in that FIR. However, the family did not inform us about any such latest incident. They were having the security cover till some time ago, but currently, they have no such threat perception. I would need to check the latest status of their security cover."
