62-year-old doctor shot dead with own Licensed Gun During Robbery Bid

Phagwara: A tragic incident unfolded in Bhano-Langa village in Punjab's Kapurthala district where a 62-year-old doctor lost his life after being shot by a bullet from his own licensed double-barrelled shotgun during a confrontation with thieves who were trying to rob his clinic.

In addition to the doctor being fatally and tragically killed, one of the robbers also lost his life when an unidentified speeding vehicle struck him as he attempted to escape the scene after getting caught in the act.

As per a UNI news agency report, the incident captured on CCTV installed outside his clinic showed Dr Gurcharan Singh confronting the robbers who came to his clinic to steal items. It was reported that the doctor was distressed after repeated thefts at his establishment, and therefore he recently installed CCTV cameras to catch the robbers.

Around 1.30 am on Sunday, he noticed two suspicious individuals attempting to break the clinic’s shutter on the CCTV feed. Acting swiftly, Dr Singh and his son rushed to apprehend the culprits. Dr Singh was carrying his shotgun with him.

After reaching the clinic, the doctor and son discovered that one of the accused robbers was already inside and the other was waiting outside on a motorcycle, as per a HT news report. During the confrontation, a scuffle ensued, and a shot was fired from Dr Singh’s licensed double-barrelled shotgun. Tragically, the bullet struck Dr Singh, causing his death.

Speaking to HT, Deputy superintendent of police Gurmeet Singh said, “Seeing him at the spot, the accused tried to overpower the deceased and his son and attacked them. In the melee, a bullet went off from the gun and hit Gurcharan on the thigh."

Following this, one of the robbers attempted to flee but was fatally struck by an unidentified vehicle and died on the spot. The other thief managed to escape but was recently arrested by the police.

SSP Gaurav Tura confirmed that both bodies have been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination. “We are investigating the case thoroughly to determine the sequence of events,” he said.

A case has been registered under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 305 (theft) and 331 (4) (trespassing) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Tura said the police had successfully nabbed the thief who had managed to escape. He was a Bihar Migrant named Krishna.
