Nagpur Hospital HoD honeytrapped, Rs 1.78 lakh extorted; Seven arrested

While the city crime branch has arrested only seven gang members so far, six others are under investigation. According to the police, four women, including a woman journalist, were also involved in the carefully planned trap. Three other accused were arrested when they arrived to collect money. The police have recovered Rs 1,500 in cash and mobile phones worth Rs 1.56 lakh from the accused.

According to the Nagpur City Police Crime Branch, the 62-year-old doctor was targeted in September when he travelled to Gondia to meet a friend. He was allegedly lured by the gang with the promise of sexual favours, during which they secretly recorded explicit photos and videos. 

Later, the gang members posed as Gondia police personnel to threaten him with arrest and public shaming. They used the visuals to threaten and blackmail him, reports TOI. 

In one incident, two accused allegedly forced him to withdraw Rs 1 lakh from an ATM. Even after he returned to Nagpur, the harassment continued, and he was compelled to transfer money to multiple bank accounts. The total amount extorted from the doctor was around Rs 1.78 lakh.

Following this, a woman's brother one day allegedly created a ruckus at the hospital, while other gang members threatened to implicate the doctor in a false rape case. The gang allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore from the victim to refrain from making the explicit content public, but later agreed to "settle" the matter for Rs 60 lakh.

After being unable to tolerate the pressure, the doctor approached the police on 4 December, 2025 and filed a complaint. Based on the complaint, the police laid a trap and asked the doctor to deliver Rs 3 lakh as an initial payment at a hotel, where the three accused arrived.

ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijit Patil formed a special team under PI Dilip Chandan and arrived at the hotel. When the accused rejected the partial payment and insisted on the full Rs 60 lakh, the police team moved in and arrested them. Further interrogation led to the arrest of the remaining four accused.

A case has been registered at Tehsil Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 308(2) (extortion), 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), and 3(5) (joint liability).
