NEET 2017 AIR 1, MAMC Radiodiagnosis Medico Found Dead

New Delhi: In an unfortunate incident, a 25-year-old postgraduate student from the Radio-diagnosis Department of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) in Central Delhi was found dead in his room.

According to recent media reports, since no suicide note was found at the scene, the exact circumstances and motivations behind the death is unclear. However, Police have informed that there were no signs of foul play yet.

The deceased doctor was a bright student and secured All India Rank 1 in the National Eligibility-and-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) exam held in 2017 and thereafter pursued MBBS from MAMC.

Meanwhile, colleagues, friends, and family members of the deceased doctor are being questioned to ascertain the cause of his death. The authorities have urged anyone with information or insights into the doctor's death to come forward and cooperate with the ongoing probe. The body of the deceased will be handed over to his family in Punjab after the autopsy.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, police have informed that the deceased doctor's father became worried when his son didn't respond to phone calls. Thereafter, he sent a friend to check on his son. However, the friend found that the door was locked from the inside. After breaking open the door, the friend discovered the doctor's lifeless body and immediately informed the police. An inquest was conducted after this.

Expressing their condolences and support for the deceased doctor's family, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at MAMC issued a statement in this regard on yesterday.

"With a very heavy heart, we mourn the untimely and tragic demise of our beloved post-gradiate resident Dr. Navdeep Singh of batch 2023, Department of Radio-diagnosis, MAMC. His presence will be profoundly missed, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace," read the statement.

As per police officials, the 25-year-old deceased doctor hailed from Sri Mukstar Sahib, Punjab, and his father works as a principal of a government school. The deceased's brother is also a medical student and is currently pursuing his MBBS degree from a Chandigarh-based medical institute. The deceased was living in a PG room in Parsi Anjuman.

Commenting on the matter, deputy commissioner of police (central) Harsha Vardhan told Hindustan Times, "Around 7.10am, we received a call about the alleged suicide. We have been told that his father was trying to call him and later sent a friend to check on him, who found the door locked from the inside. The door was broken and it was found that the deceased committed suicide by hanging. An inquest is underway. No suicide note has been found."

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that previously while responding to a Right to Information (RTI) application, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had informed that altogether 122 medical students committed suicide in between 2018 and 2022 and among them 64 students were pursuing MBBS course and 58 were doctors pursuing various postgraduate courses.

Addressing the recent incident of suicide of the MAMC PG medico, Health Activist Dr. Dhruv Chauhan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "The Suicide of Dr Navdeep Singh should make everyone question about what is so horrifically wrong with the medical system of the country that this profession has become number 1 in terms of suicides ! He was a doctor who secured “AIR 1 IN NEET UG 2017” He was currently doing MD Radiology from India’s top MAMC He cracked all the exams and phases that requires excessive Mental strength and physical well-being at both academic and personal level Despite knowing that healthcare professionals are often in the state of mental health apocalypse why •There is no monthly check of Mental health ! • No strict Grievances portals and immediate action on it ! • No health-line number for doctors health ! India which is already lacking specialist doctors should understand it’s a national loss because of incompetency of the organisations and govt to implement strong mental health guidelines It’s a collective failure of all ! #ripnavdeepsingh."
