Dibrugarh: In a shocking incident, an on-duty paediatrician at Margherita Civil Hospital became the victim of physical assault after a group of youths allegedly assaulted him over the treatment of a rabies patient.

Three accused were apprehended by the Margherita police, following the doctor's complaint. They were charged under the various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The doctor was beaten by the intoxicated group who were accompanying a patient seeking treatment for rabies after being bitten by a dog. After informing about the unavailability of the anti-rabies vaccine, the group became agitated and confronted the doctor and the matter escalated to a physical attack on the doctor.

The incident unfolded on Monday night at around 10.30 pm when the doctor was on emergency night duty at the hospital when the accused and his companions brought in a patient for rabies injection who had suffered a dog bite. After giving the patient first aid, the doctor advised them to come back in the morning as the vaccine was unavailable at that time.

According to the complaint, the group then left and went to a nearby pharmacy to get the vaccine administered. But instead of returning home, they came back to the hospital and confronted the doctor about the non-availability of rabies vaccines. The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical assault on the doctor. Soon the attackers fled the hospital after the doctor sustained critical injuries from the attack, TOI reports.

The CCTV positioned at the entrance of the emergency department of the hospital captured the entire incident and played a major role in identifying the accused who assaulted the doctor.

In the video footage, the accused and his companions can be seen confronting the doctor who proceeds to violently attack him in front of others present at the scene. Following this, the doctor could be seen struggling while trying to free himself from the accused's grasp.

The next day, the doctor approached the police and filed a complaint against the attackers. Taking the footage as evidence, the police registered the case and arrested the three accused on Wednesday. They have been sent to judicial custody.

Speaking to India Today, the doctor said, "I was on night duty when the ward boy called me for a few dog bite cases..after giving first aid, I asked the patient's attendants to come the next day for arv injection due to certain formalities but the attendants argued for injection on the same night."
