Mumbai: Based on a complaint, an online fraudster cheated a 44-year-old woman doctor from Versova through Gpay and had taken Rs 1.48 lakh from her bank account.

The incident took place on April 5 between 8 pm and 9 pm when the doctor searched on the Internet for Anjali Book Store contact details in Andheri (West), as she was planning to buy books for her daughter. Soon she placed an online order there and paid Rs 1,200 through Gpay.

According to the Versova police, the fraudster pulled off the scam after convincing the doctor that she had to scan a QR code to generate an order receipt without which the books could not be delivered.

Using his contact number and Anjali Book Store in Andheri (West) as bait, the fraudster had edited the Google business listing online.

A Versova police officer told TOI "We have sought details from the bank to trace the money trails and of the person in whose account the four transactions got credited. We have also got in touch with the bookstore to know if any employee is involved in the fraud. The fraudster communicated with the doctor via WhatsApp so that he cannot be tracked."

The doctor in her complaint alleged that "I paid Rs1,200 after the fraudster provided me with the mobile number to make payment through G Pay and told me that the books will be delivered at home in an hour. Minutes later, I received the call from the same person who asked me to scan a QR Code. When I denied doing so, the fraudster said that to deliver the order I have to scan the code as it will generate the order receipt. I unwillingly scanned the code and three fraudulent transactions for Rs 49,991, Rs 45,630, and Rs 51,151 got debited from my account."
