Orthopaedic professor Dr Sandip Ghosh reappointed as Principal of R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital

Kolkata: In a significant development in the transfer of professors, the West Bengal Health Department has reinstated orthopaedic professor Sandip Ghosh as the principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital (RGKMCH).

An order issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, West Bengal, on Monday mentioned, "The Governor is pleased to appoint Prof (Dr) Sandip Ghosh of the West Bengal Medical Education Service, now employed as Professor, Department of Orthopedics, Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, to act as Principal, R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, with immediate effect and until further orders."

Previously, Dr Sandeep was transferred to the Murshidabad Medical College Hospital (MMCH) as a professor in the orthopaedic department, triggering controversy in the medical fraternity. He was transferred within 24 hours after being appointed as the principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. It is worth mentioning that Ghosh has been reappointed as the college principal for the second time in just over five months.

The recent transfer has taken place in response to the protests held by RG Kar Medical College students who expressed their displeasure over the joining of new Principal (Dr Manas). Therefore, the government decided to remove the new principal from his position and reinstate the previous principal, (Dr Sandip Ghosh). 

While Dr Sandip has been reappointed as the principal, Manas Kumar Bandyopadhyay, the current principal, has been reassigned to Barasat Medical College and Hospital. Earlier, he served as Principal of Barasat Medical College and Hospital.

"The Governor is pleased to appoint Prof (Dr) Manas Kumar Bandyopadhyay of the West Bengal Medical Education Service, now employed as Principal, R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata to act as Principal, Barasat Government Medical College and Hospital, North 24 Parganas, with immediate effect and until further orders," mentioned the order. 

On the other hand, Dr Suparna Dutta who was given additional charge as the principal of the Barasat Medical College has been reinstated as the Director of the Institute of Health and Family Welfare at Swasthya Bhawan on Monday with immediate effect on Monday. 

Another order issued by the health department on Monday said that Dr Sudipta Roy, an MLA from Sreerampur in Hooghly will be the new Chairman of Rogi Kalyan Samiti at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in place of Dr Santanu Sen MP of Rajya Sabha for smooth functioning of the hospital activities.
