Over 2500 doctors for 194 JR Posts at VMMC, medicos warn of soaring unemployment
New Delhi: Medical professionals are raising alarm over rising unemployment among MBBS graduates, as more than 2,500 doctors appeared for just 194 temporary Junior Resident (JR) positions at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Dr. Mahesh Kumar Gurjar shared visuals of the overwhelming turnout of medical graduates at the selection venue. He remarked, “MBBS is taking over B.A. and B.Tech in terms of unemployment. Over 2,500 candidates turned up for 194 temporary JR posts at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital.”
Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Karan Junega, a member of the Indian Medical Association Medical Students Network (IMA MSN), called the situation deeply troubling. He emphasized the urgent need to regulate the unchecked rise in new medical colleges and seat intakes, which, he argued, are outpacing job opportunities. “This is a sad state of affairs. There is an urgent need to curb the mushrooming of medical institutions and simultaneously create more employment opportunities for qualified doctors through regular recruitment drives,” he said.
Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), located in New Delhi, is one of the most preferred colleges in India for students aspiring to study medicine. The college offers MBBS, BDS, and many other undergraduate health courses.
