Padma Shri Dr Mahesh Verma reappointed as Vice Chancellor of GGSIP University

New Delhi: Padma Shri awardee and renowned prosthodontist Dr Mahesh Verma has been reappointed as the Vice Chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) by the Directorate of Higher Education on Friday.  

Dr Verma is the former Director and Principal of Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences. He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine in 2014. 

An order issued by the university regarding his reappointment on June 7 mentioned "In pursuance of Order No.DHE.6(115)/2008-09/Part file-1/862-72 dated 06.06.2024, Directorate of Higher Education, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, and consequent upon his acceptance for re-appointment, Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma is hereby re-appointed as Vice Chancellor, GGSIP University for another term or till attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. The other terms and conditions of the re-appointment shall be as per the statutory provisions of Act/Statutes of GGSIP University."

Dr Verma graduated with a degree in dentistry (BDS) from the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram and secured his master's degree (MDS) from the same institution, specializing in prosthodontics. 

He joined the Institute of Dental Sciences of Maulana Azad Medical College and became the Head of the institute in 1995.  He also did advanced training in prosthodontics at the State University of New York, Buffalo and earned an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi.  

Dr Mahesh Verma is the president of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) India Division, the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (iADH) India Chapter and the Indian Academy of Restorative Dentistry (IARD). 

He is the receiver of the National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology by the President of India, February 2020, National Oral Healthcare 'Sushruta Award' by Indian Dental Association, December 2017, 'Padmashri' by Hon'ble President of India 2014 (4th Highest Civilian Award), 'Dr. B.C. Roy National Award' by President of India 2007 (Highest Medical Award presented by President of India), 'Dr. B.C. Shroff Oration' - Indian Prosthodontic Society Annual Conference 2007, 'Dr. P.N. Behl Foundation Award By Delhi Medical Association - 2006, Best Doctor 'State Award' by Govt. of NCT of Delhi - 2001.
