Jabalpur: Eminent paediatric surgeon Dr V K Raina of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB) Medical College, Jabalpur, passed away at the age of 81. As a final tribute, he was accorded the ‘Guard of Honour’ for his service to humanity.

Dr Raina donated his body to the medical college, expressing a desire that it be used to help others learn and improve lives. His gesture reflects his lifelong commitment to the field of medicine and service to humanity. Colleagues and well-wishers paid tribute to him at the NSCB Medical College premises, remembering his contribution and offering prayers for his soul to rest in peace.

Dr. Raina was more than just a surgeon; he was a visionary healer who dedicated his life to the smallest and most vulnerable patients. His presence in the corridors of Jabalpur Medical College was a source of inspiration for decades, and his loss leaves a void that will be felt across the medical fraternity.

Dr Anupam Sahni, associate professor at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical, posted a tribute on social media and stated, “Known for his golden hands, Dr. Raina’s surgical precision saved countless lives. He tackled the most complex congenital anomalies with a calm demeanour that reassured both his colleagues and anxious parents. As a professor, he didn't just teach surgery and technique; he taught the soul of medicine. Thousands of surgeons practicing today carry a piece of his wisdom, shaped by his rigorous standards and paternal guidance.”

“In an era of changing values, Dr. Raina remained an unwavering symbol of medical ethics. He treated every child with the same devotion, regardless of their background, embodying the true spirit of the Hippocratic Oath. While his physical presence is gone, his legacy lives on in the children who grew up to lead healthy lives because of him, and in the students who continue to practice medicine with the ethics he instilled in them. Rest in peace, Dr. V.K. Raina Sir, your name will forever be etched in the history of Jabalpur Medical College and in the hearts of those you healed,” he further added.
