Chandigarh: Recognizing that doctors need rest to provide proper patient care, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGI Chandigarh) has decided that bunker beds will be installed for the resident doctors in their restrooms. The facility is set to be inaugurated on January 26.

The move was made as a result of the overcrowding of resting areas causing fatigue to resident doctors. They had no personal space or proper sleep to recharge their body to work.

With the launch of the bunker beds, the resident doctors will be able to rest in between during duty hours and help them recharge and be more alert during their shifts, ultimately leading to better patient care.

Doctors who treat patients round the clock often suffer from mental and physical breakdowns due to a lack of proper sleep. Working for many hours without sufficient rest wears them out and sometimes causes them to fall ill.

It is evident that doctors take breaks during working hours since they are human as well. For this, the bunker beds will be installed at the institute to provide a comfortable and private space for these doctors.

For now, 10 bunker beds are expected to be installed and more will be installed soon. The management of the beds is being overseen by the Association of Resident Doctors, The Tribune reports.

“The availability of more beds will also resolve the issue of cramped and overcrowded resting areas, which can be stressful and lead to fatigue. Having dedicated sleeping quarters will also help to promote a better work-life balance for the resident doctors, allowing them to take necessary breaks without having to worry about finding a place to rest,” said a senior resident doctor at the PGI.
