Patna: Reviving the fear of 'rangdari' being run in the state, a prominent doctor from Motihari town of Bihar was faced with an extortion letter asking him to cough up Rs 2 crore and threatening to kill him and his family members if the demands were not met in a couple of days.

The doctor received an extortion letter which mentioned that the extortionists would kill him and his family if he failed to pay the demanded money within specific days. The practice of rangdari in Bihar has been a topic of concern for many years.

The cases of extortion have increased in Bihar in the last few days. Keeping in view of sensitivity, district SP Kantesh Kumar Mishra constituted a team headed by Sadar DSP Ranjan Kumar to investigate the incident.

In view of the seriousness of the incident, a special investigation team (SIT) had been formed under the leadership of the Sadar Sub Divisional Police Officer. They have declared that the matter is under investigation covering all perspectives.

The doctor said in the statement: “I found an envelope on the table of my cabin. It was kept under a towel used as a laptop cover. After completing the work for the day on Monday, when I shut the laptop and picked up the towel to cover it, I found an envelope. When I opened the envelope, a letter was inside.”

As per the content of the letter, the extortionists have demanded Rs 2 crore from the doctor. The extortionists also threatened dire consequences if he reveals the letter to the police.

“We are investigating the incident and scanning CCTV cameras in and outside of the diagnostic centre to identify the accused,” said Ranjan Kumar, DSP of Motihari Sadar range.

On the other hand, a security arrangement has been requested by a group of medical professionals. The doctors contacted the East Champaran superintendent of police (SP) Kantesh Kumar Mishra and sought protection to the doctor, reports HT.

“We informed the SP about the difficulties faced by doctors as a result of this extortion demand. In addition, we have requested protection up until the arrest is made,” said Dr BK Pandey, Indian Medical Association (IMA) Motihari unit secretary.
