Renowned physician, Padma Shri Dr SR Mehta passes away at 95

Jaipur: Dr SR Mehta, a Padma Shri awardee and one of Rajasthan’s most respected physicians, passed away in Jaipur on Thursday at the age of 95. His last rites were performed with full state honours at the Adarsh Nagar cremation ground in Jaipur, reflecting the respect and recognition he earned through decades of dedicated service to healthcare and medical education.
Dr Mehta dedicated his life to strengthening healthcare and medical training in Rajasthan. He completed his MBBS from Sawai Man Singh Medical College in 1953 and later earned his MD in General Medicine from the same institution in 1957.

During his illustrious career, he served as the principal of SMS Medical College and also headed SMS Hospital, two of the state’s premier medical institutions. Under his leadership, both institutions earned recognition for academic excellence and quality healthcare services.
According to news reports by TOI, Dr Mehta was associated with several top medical bodies, including the Medical Council of India, Indian Medical Association, National Board of Examinations, Rajasthan Medical Council, and AIIMS advisory panels.
Known for his diagnostic skills and ethical medical practice, Dr Mehta mentored generations of doctors and remained active in public health and academic discussions for decades, reports PTI.
Among his notable students was former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who studied under him at SMS Medical College.
His contribution to clinical medicine and medical research earned him numerous honours. He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, along with Dr B.C. Roy National Award and Rajasthan Shri for his exceptional service to healthcare and medical education.
Dr S.R. Mehta’s passing marks the end of an era in Rajasthan’s medical history. However, his contributions to healthcare, medical education, and ethical medical practice will continue to inspire future generations of doctors.
