Speaking to TNIE, Dr Laxmi said it is her humble wish that her contribution will help the institute establish a gynaecological oncology programme, shaping future healers and offering hope to countless women. In addition to this landmark contribution, Dr. Bai has donated Rs 3 lakh to the Berhampur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society to support adolescent vaccination drives that help prevent cancers among young women.
Her gesture has earned deep appreciation from the medical fraternity. Dr. Saubhagya Kumar Jena, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, issued an appreciation letter acknowledging her noble act upon receiving the cheque.
“We will chalk out a plan in discussion with members for the proper utilisation of Rs 3 lakh, which she donated for cancer vaccination of adolescent girls,” said Indira Pal, secretary of the society, reports TOI.
Doctors from AIIMS Bhubaneswar are expected to attend a felicitation function at Dr. Bai’s residence in Bhavnagar, organised by some of her former students. The team is likely to share how they intend to utilise the donated funds.
With a medical career that spans over fifty years, Dr. Laxmi Bai is widely admired not only for her clinical proficiency but also for her unwavering commitment to ensuring dignified, accessible healthcare for women.
Born on December 5, 1926, Dr. Laxmi Bai’s illustrious journey began when she enrolled in the first-ever MBBS batch of SCB Medical College, Cuttack, in 1945. She completed her degree in 1950 and went on to pursue both DGO and MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) from Madras Medical College in 1958. Her academic brilliance earned her a coveted one-year stipend to pursue an MPH at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA.

She began her medical service in 1950 at the Government Hospital, Sundargarh, and retired in 1986 as a professor of O&G at MKCG Medical College, Berhampur.
Recognition has followed Dr Laxmi Bai throughout her career. She has received numerous awards, including Lady Eminence of South Odisha, Bharat Jyoti Award, International Friendship Society, and Best Citizen of India Award.
